A political marriage between Francesca, the proud and beautiful daughter of the Polenta family, and Giovanni (Gianchotto), the eldest son of the Malatesta family, is underway. The envoy from the Malatesta family who visits Francesca is Paolo, Gianchotto's beautiful younger brother. Francesca falls in love with Paolo at first sight and is elated, thinking he is the one she is going to marry. However, Paolo was a decoy to get Francesca to marry Gianchotto. After being tricked into becoming Gianchotto's wife, Francesca is once again attracted to Paolo, who returns triumphant from battle, and the two cross the line. The one who tipped off Gianciotto about her infidelity was Maratestino, the youngest brother who also had feelings for Francesca. Jealous, Gianciotto takes the opportunity to attend the secret meeting... The tragic love story between Francesca of the Polenta family and Paolo of the Malatesta family, which appears in the Inferno section of Dante's \"Divine Comedy,\" has been the subject of numerous literary, musical, and artistic works. This production is based on one of those works, D'Annunzio's play \"Francesca da Rimini,\" and the script was written by Tito Ricordi, a writer and second-generation owner of the music publishing company Ricordi.Riccardo Zandonai composed to it and it was performed in Turin in 1914. In this production, director Christophe Roy dramatizes the rivalry between brothers who end up killing each other over one attractive woman against a simple stage backdrop. The role of Francesca is played by popular soprano Sara Jakubiak, who sang the title role in Korngold's opera \"The Miracle of Heliane,\" winner of the 2020 Opus Classics Award. Her three brothers are joined by rising star tenor Jonathan Tetelman (Paolo), who makes his Deutsche Oper Berlin debut in this production; Ivan Inveraldi (Gianchotto), who came to Japan in 2017 to great acclaim as Iago in Verdi's opera \"Otello\"; and Carlo Rizzi, who is active mainly in Italian opera, brings out from this work a profound sound from the orchestra that is sometimes reminiscent of Wagner, while remaining in the musical lineage of the Verismo Opera. The orchestra is a very good example of the \"Wagnerian\" style of opera.
