He began his career as a violinist with the Royal Orchestra in Copenhagen, where he submitted the score of one of his own symphonies for performance, but it was rejected. Disheartened, Gese reportedly sent the score to Mendelssohn, who received it with great acclaim and arranged for its premiere in Leipzig. While his works were influenced by his benefactor, they are all deeply memorable pieces that incorporate Nordic folk songs throughout. In particular, the melodic beauty found in these violin sonatas shines with a brilliance that no one else can replicate.
