A Collection of Opera and Ballet Suites Full of Exotic Flavor, Performed by a Renowned Austrian Early Music Orchestra]\nThe stage works of Rameau, one of the leading composers of 18th-century France, have seen an increase in performances at opera houses around the world in the 21st century, attracting attention with their spectacular staging, dance, and innovative direction. Unlike contemporary Italian opera, which primarily consists of repeated recitatives and arias, Rameau’s operas and opera-ballets interweave a diverse array of elements, including recitatives, petites airs (songs accompanied by basso continuo), solos, duets, trios, quartets, choruses, and symphonies and dance pieces for orchestra. In particular, since dance pieces account for about a quarter of the total, combining them alone creates a French-style orchestral suite. Modern orchestras have increasingly begun to perform these works. France during Rameau’s lifetime was an era of the Enlightenment, marked by the rise of the Encyclopedists. People’s curiosity to learn about everything in the world extended to other cultures. The two operas included in this suite, *Zoroastre* and *Les Indes galantes*, reflect this interest in, imagination of, and longing for the East.\n*Zoroastre* (known in German as *Zarathustra*) is a musical tragedy (tragédie lyrique) depicting the conflict between good and evil, centered on the founder of Zoroastrianism. Due to the novelty of its subject matter and music, it was not well-received by the audience at its 1749 premiere and was met with criticism; however, the 1756 revival, revised with added romantic elements and a more accessible story and music, was a great success. The suite performed here is taken from the 1749 premiere version. From the overture, the innovative harmonies are stimulating, and the sequence of short dance pieces, each with its own distinct character, keeps the listener captivated.\n*Les Indes galantes* is an opera-ballet consisting of a prologue and four acts, structured as an omnibus in which people from imaginary Eastern lands appear one after another. Among Rameau’s stage works, it is one of the few that is still frequently performed today. This suite consists of seven movements, including the overture and the famous “Dance of the Savages.” The music, brimming with exotic charm, is sure to delight listeners.\nThe Orfeo Baroque Orchestra is a historic Austrian period instrument orchestra founded by Michi Gaick. Over the course of more than 30 years of activity, the ensemble has expanded its repertoire—centered on Telemann’s orchestral works—to include composers ranging from Bach to Gluck, Haydn, Schubert, and Mendelssohn, earning high acclaim worldwide. In this recording, a large ensemble featuring a string section of 3-3-3-2-2, a woodwind section with two flutes, two oboes, two bassoons, and two horns, along with percussion and harpsichord, delivers a magnificent performance that brings to life the rich colors and exotic atmosphere of Rameau’s works. This is a masterpiece that allows you to fully savor the essence of Rameau’s music!\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"CPO","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":52490344235297,"sku":"4589538831240","price":22.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538831240.jpg?v=1774486315","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-it\/products\/4589538831240","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
