His music is characterized by enchanting melodies, and his symphonies are especially appreciated. This album focuses on his two symphonies. The Symphony in C minor was never performed during his lifetime in both its first and revised drafts, but it is an interesting work with a variety of ideas superimposed on a classical form. The first movement is in sonata form with a dramatic recapitulation and an impressive coda. The second movement is in five-part form and has a rural atmosphere, while the third movement is a minuet-like scherzo with dotted rhythms. The finale opens with a toccata-like introduction, followed by the development of a melancholy theme. The Symphony in B-flat major was also not performed during his lifetime, and the revised version performed in 1839 has a portion of the first movement that has survived, but the first draft of 1821 is performed in this album. The concertante was presumably written for the virtuosos of the time, and Domenico Dragonetti was the contrabassist at the first performance.The overture \"Storm\" was Potter's last orchestral piece, after which he is said to have composed only small pieces or revised previous works.
