Born in Aberdeen and trained locally in piano and organ, Center moved to Huntly in Aberdeenshire in 1943, where he taught for six years before becoming a composer, and from 1944 his works were broadcast by the BBC and became popular. Although he was known as the \"Scottish Bartók\" for his wild energy, he was not eager to publish his works, and only a few of them have been published to date. He was essentially a composer who concentrated on piano music, and in the series of \"Preludes and Fugues\" placed at the end of the album, he also shows his mastery of counterpoint. On the other hand, inspired by two Polish soldiers he met in 1945 (one a cellist, the other a violinist), he wrote several chamber works, including the sonata included on this album, which have a flavor reminiscent of Britten. Christopher Guild, who plays the piano, is a veteran of the field and has been highly acclaimed for his interpretations of modern and contemporary British works by Stevenson, Wordsworth, and others.
