Together with Atterberg and Pettersson-Berriel, he wrote some of the most original and representative Swedish works of the first half of the 20th century. His catalog includes six operas, several ballets, vocal works with orchestral accompaniment, symphonic poems, and chamber music, but most important of all are his five symphonies. All of his symphonies have titles, and the ones included on this album are No. 4 and No. 5. The fourth is a lighthearted work that was the result of a bet with his friend Atterberg, but one of the conditions was that it exceeded the length of one of the pieces, \"no longer than 20 minutes,\" and Berri had to pay a fine. The fifth and final symphony is a gorgeous and dramatic piece of music. The title \"passioni\" means both passion and suffering, and each movement is full of ups and downs that seem to satisfy both. The closing section of the last movement features a chorale that seems to ascend silently toward the heavens.Passion and Passion is the end of a long hesitation that leads to reconciliation.
