The setting is a cold village in Moravia at the end of the 19th century. Yenoufa, the most beautiful girl in the village who lives with her pious stepmother Kostelnicka, is in love with her two half-brothers, the playful Shteva and the serious Lazza, who run a flour mill in the Brija family. When Jenoufa falls for Shuteva, Latsa gets jealous and approaches Jenoufa, unintentionally wounding her on the cheek with a knife. A short time later, her stepmother Kostelnicka tells her that Suteva's child, which Jenůfa secretly gave birth to, is dead... \"Jenůfa,\" Janaáček's third opera, was composed and premiered in Brno in 1904. Based on Gabriela Prysová's play about the tragedy of a closed Moravian village community and its relationships, Janáček wrote the libretto and composed the music in Moravian (one of the Czech languages), which is known as one of his most famous operas. Asmik Grigorian (Jenoufa), who has made a name for himself at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals in recent years, makes his Covent Garden debut in this production. The hidden leading role of Kostelnicka, the stepmother, is played by the veteran Carita Mattila. The cast features Saimir Pilg, whose beautiful voice and stage presence have made him a sought-after performer in opera houses around the world, as Suteva, the brother of the Brija family, and Nicky Spence, who won the Gramophone Award for Best Solo Vocal Performance in 2020 for Janacek's \"Diary of a Missing Man\" as Lazza. Klaus Guth's direction visualizes the psychological conflicts and sense of entrapment of the characters on stage, while the Hungarian-born, talented Henrik Nanasi colorfully spins Janacek's music full of sharp rhythms and emotion.
