He lost his family and grew up in an orphanage, but studied piano and folk instruments and went on to the Moscow Conservatory. At the start of Operation Barbarossa, he joined the army, where he composed music for the military and played an active role. He then returned to the Moscow Conservatory to study with Shostakovich and Myaskovsky. His talent blossomed, and Galinin was highly acclaimed in the Soviet Union at the time, winning the Stalin Prize for his \"Epic\" in 1950. However, in 1951 he developed schizophrenia and continued to write music while battling the illness. Known for his free-spirited style, his last chamber work, \"String Quartet No. 2,\" written in 1957, is a music dominated by sadness and resignation.
