Dutch conductor Halke de Roos is one of those who question Beethoven's tempo specifications. He thoroughly analyzed the score and came to the conclusion that \"the metronome indications are wrong. When performed at the tempo he independently derived, the entire work, which normally takes about 35 minutes to play, is 46 minutes long, and emerges as a majestic work comparable to the Furtwängler recording (52 minutes) from 1952. The scherzo movement, in particular, is a highlight of the performance, as if the audience is \"chewing the music over and over\". The Vienna Symphony Orchestra also gives a tenacious performance.
