He later became a conductor, and in 1936, in his thirties, he became the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic, establishing himself as Toscanini's successor, and later, from 1943, as music director of the Halle Orchestra, where he achieved great fame. He has made numerous guest appearances with numerous orchestras, and his personality and musicianship have won him great popularity among both members and audiences alike, and all of his performances are eternally illuminating. He was a convincing interpreter of Mahler and Sibelius, as well as Vaughan Williams and Delius, and here we hear a rare performance of Britten's \"Serenade\".This performance, with horn virtuoso Baumann as soloist and the great singer English, is Barbirolli's only recordings of this music. The performances of Schubert and Sibelius are, of course, unquestionable. The Cologne Radio SO also meets his demands perfectly.
