He entered the Royal Conservatory of Madrid at the age of 13 and won first prize in the piano department in 1930, which saved him from being drafted into the army and allowed him to study in Belgium and Germany. After the end of the civil war, he returned to Spain, where he served as principal conductor of the Orquesta Nacional de España from 1945, and was appointed music director for life in 1947. He made many recordings with DECCA, and most of his repertoire consisted of works from the Spanish, Russian, and other national music schools, but this rare Beethoven in Madrid is just as exciting, and you can see that he plays with great enthusiasm. The overture to \"The Sold Bride,\" from the same year, is his usual flowing music.
