However, the contemporary composer Zapf has attempted to create a complete string quartet world that is in direct opposition to the classical world. There is no melody or harmony. By making full use of pitchcarts, tremolos, harmonics, glissandos, sul ponticello, and all other techniques, and by having all four members of the ensemble use the same technique in most scenes, a world is opened up in which a single mass of sounds ripples, changes shape, and transforms itself. The effect is full of sharp and piercing expressions that are heard with the ear.
