Four hundred years ago, the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), centered in Germany (Holy Roman Empire), is said to have been one of the longest and most destructive wars in human history. The songs written during just that period include not only ballads, folk songs, and hymns about loss and despair, depression, fear, and suffering caused by war, but also songs with striking lyrics appealing for peace and hope. These songs are brought back to life today with \"The Playfords\" style arrangements (vocals, recorders, guitar and lute, gamba, and percussion). Instrumental works by Swedish and Russian military officer, viol player, and composer Tobias Hume, Schütz's intimate religious and secular songs, and Scheidt's Courant d'Olorosa were printed in thousands of copies at the time. There are also many prints and other works from the period that contain only lyrics and no melody, but which indicate guidelines such as \"sing on the note of ...\" or \"sing on the note of ...\". Some of them give guidelines such as \"sing on the note of ...\". Some of the texts selected here are particularly easy to understand even today.Numerous allusions to specific matters and names are intentionally omitted, but will instead reflect the sentiment of the era in which the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. The German antiquarian music ensemble The Playfords was founded in 2001, borrowing the name of late 17th century English music publisher John Playford [1621-1686] for the ensemble's name. The group has attracted attention as a group that uses historical instruments and unprecedented arrangements to bring out new charms in ballroom music from the Renaissance to the early Baroque. The group's authentic and innovative interpretations, which are the result of spontaneous improvisation, have received a great deal of acclaim, and the group also collaborates with dancers and theater. Playford was the compiler of the best-selling \"English Dancing Master,\" published in 1651. This collection of songs and instructions on how to dance English country dances was published in editions until 1728, when it was expanded into a three-volume book. The music was written in melody only, leaving the chords and bass notes to the improvisation and taste of the performer. The Playfords are known for their playful approach to music, bringing ancient butoh music back to life in the modern age.
