From the "French Baroque" series by the genius Hervé Niquet and Conseil Spirituel, we are pleased to announce the re-release of a newly remastered version of a particularly popular masterpiece, the musical tragedy "Semele" by Marin Marais! Trained by the great viol star Sainte-Colombes, Marin Marais earned his reputation as the best court viol player in France during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Following "Alcide," "Ariane and Bacchus," and "Alcione," "Semele," the fourth and final major musical tragedy, was a major factor in Marais' rise to fame not as a violist but as an opera composer. Semele," consisting of a prologue and five acts, was first performed in Paris in 1709, but its entire story has been shrouded in secrecy because the complete score has not survived. Hervé Niquet, a genius of the French Baroque who never allowed any compromise, started to restore and reconstruct it using the newly discovered score. In 2006, the world premiere of the complete restored version of "Semele" was realized at the Beaune Baroque Music Festival held in Beaune, France. Tokyo M-Plus
