The LSO has previously released No. 8 (LSO 0822, recorded in April 2018) and No. 4 (LSO 0832, recorded in November 2018), which have been highly acclaimed worldwide for their unwavering expression and high voltage. Noseda says that the First and Fifth have something in common in that the First is his first symphony and the Fifth is his first symphony after "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County." The performance of the First Symphony, which Shostakovich wrote at the age of 18, and the Fifth Symphony, which he wrote around the age of 30, are each performed with tremendous energy, each of which brings out the essence of the other work.
