Description:

Rossini's "The Italian Lady of Algiers" with Bartoli as the beautiful Isabella at the 2018 Salzburg FestivalBartoli's beautiful Isabella in Rossini's "The Italian Lady of Algiers," a hugely successful production by Reiser & Corlier, performed at the Salzburg Festival in August 2018, is now available on video. The performance premiered at the Pentecostal Festival in May of the same year and was repeated at the Summer Festival. The leading role is played by Cecilia Bartoli, and the production is directed by Moshe Reiser and Patrice Caulier, who have collaborated with Bartoli on numerous occasions. The period setting was moved from the 17th century to the present day, and the audience was thrilled by the colorful stage and comical direction. Bartoli, in his first role in this production, played Isabella, a role much anticipated by fans. Bartoli performed Isabella with her rich expressiveness and good looks intact, her singing with increased maturity, and her glamorous figure in full bloom. Ildar Abdrazakov, the Russian-born bass who plays the role of Mustafa, also sang with power, rich technique, and sophistication. Edgardo Rocha as Lindoro, a young tenor who in recent years has made a speciality of Rossini's music, sang with a spacious voice and enlivened the audience. The performance is by Ensemble Matheus, a baroque orchestra led by Spinozzi, who has performed with Bartoli many times. The satirical direction and talented singers make this an exquisite comedy. SynopsisThe play takes place in Algiers. Mustafa, the governor of Algiers, is having marital difficulties with his wife Elvira, so he orders his subordinate Hurley to bring a beautiful Italian woman to the city. Mustafa then tries to get rid of Elvira by substituting a young Italian slave, Lindoro, for Elvira. Hurley finds the beautiful Isabella and gives her to Mustafa, who immediately falls in love with her and plans to take her as his wife. However, Isabella and Lindoro are former lovers. They meet again in Algiers and attempt to escape together. Mustafa, who is crazy about Isabella, is completely deceived, and the two succeed in escaping. Mustafa is chastened by this and returns to his wife. King International
