Description:

MELOLASSIC's specialty, a CD of buried master musicians, here features performances by four violinists under the tutelage of Jene Hubay. André Gértrelle (1907-1998) was a violinist born in Budapest, Hungary, and based in Brussels, Belgium, as a young man. He was known as a defender of Bartók, and his Mozart sonata K.377 from 1958 is a clear, clean Mozart without romanticism, and a pleasure to listen to. Frank's Violin Sonata is a gentleman's performance, restrained but rich in flavor. Robert Vilovay (1921-2015), a violinist of Hungarian descent born in Dalvar, now in Croatia, became a student of the late Hubay at the age of 13, and his teacher was a great admirer. At the Eugène Isay Competition (later the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition) held in March 1937, the year of Hubay's death, Vilovay, who had just turned 16, won the 9th prize while David Oistrakh, Riccardo Odnoposov, and Laura Bobesco were in first, second, and seventh place, respectively. Vilovay, just 16 years old, won 9th place and quickly made a name for herself.Vilovay was active internationally in the 1940s and 1950s, but later curtailed his activities and retired as a soloist to spend time teaching and as a member of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had a summer retreat. He lived a long life (94 years), but there are no recordings of his music, and he has been completely forgotten. However, if you listen to his performance on this CD, you will certainly feel that he had the ability that Hubaye highly praised. Not much needs to be said about Schandor Weg (1912-1997), whose 1957 Schubert and Beethoven Violin Sonatas, with Paul Baumgartner at the piano, are a blissful experience. Diane Andersen (1934-) is a Danish pianist. The item number on the spine and back of the book is incorrectly MC 1073. Tobu Shoji Co.
