Kent Nagano has been the music director of the prestigious orchestra in Quebec, Canada, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM), since 2006. Rachmaninoff & Scriabin" (AN29288) with Canadian virtuoso Alain Lefebvre, "French Trumpet Concertos" (AN29847) with OSM's principal trumpet player Paul Merkelot, and "Saint-Saëns: The Complete Violin Concertos" with concertmaster Andreou Wang in full swing. The Complete Violin Concertos" (AN28770), which features concertmaster Androu Wang. Androu Wang, a key young player in Kent Nagano's regime, returns as soloist in this fresh program featuring works by Hinastera, Bernstein, and a commission by the young Montreal composer Sammy Moosa (b.1984).Hinastera's Violin Concerto, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 1963 with Ruggiero Ricci solo and Bernstein conducting, is a work that requires more than seven percussionists handling four dozen instruments in addition to the usual large orchestra formation. Bernstein's Serenade, inspired by Plato's "Feast" and premiered in 1954 with Isaac Stern playing solo and the composer himself conducting, is also famous for the "Miracle at Tanglewood" episode in which Midori Goto cut the strings twice but played through it. The final piece is Sammy Moosa's Violin Concerto, commissioned by OSM. This mystical work, subtitled "Adrano" (also known as Adranus in Japan), the ancient god of fire, was recorded at its premiere concert in November 2019. Andrew Wang is a graduate of the Juilliard School and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Violin at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, as well as Artistic Director of the OSM Chamber Soloists and Artistic Director of the Prince Edward County Chamber Music Festival.Appointed concertmaster of the prestigious Canadian orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montréal since 2008, he has performed with world-class conductors and soloists. 1744 Michelangelo Bergonzi violin.
