Description:
A collection of works for flute and piano by Beethoven the Younger by Helen Doublinghouse, a flutist who has been remarkably active in recent years, and Phil Liotis, a pianist from Greece who is active in Germany. The flute was an instrument that was improved in the 19th century, and Theobald Böhm was one of the most significant contributors to this improvement. Böhm was not only a talented flutist and composer, but also an instrument maker who invented the "Böhm-style flute" (1847) with cylindrical tubes. Today, he is known as the "father of the flute. Böhm's remarkable achievements expanded the possibilities of the flute, and many virtuosos were active on the instrument. This album contains Böhm's arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. The arrangement is filled with the virtuosity of a virtuoso flutist, with brilliant scale progressions, but it is not merely technical; the beautiful melody of the slow movement is also utilized. Other works from the early twenties are Beethoven's only flute sonatas. This is a manuscript score discovered in Beethoven's estate, but the authenticity of the work is disputed. Since it was written before the advent of the "Böhm-style flute," the piano part plays an active role in this piece, as in other works of the time. Serenade Op.41 was published as an arrangement for flute and piano from "Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola, Op.25" composed in 1795-1796, when Beethoven moved from Bonn to Vienna. Then there is the Flute Duet, consisting of an Allegro and a Menuetto, composed at a hopeful time before he moved to Vienna, when he was accepted by Haydn and decided to go to Vienna. Finally, there is a flute arrangement of a horn sonata composed for Giovanni Punto, who was known as a horn virtuoso at the time. The work is also the lively music of the young Beethoven.
