Paul Waugh, a pianist of exceptional talent, has recorded Sigismont Thalberg's "Song Techniques Applied to the Piano" in its entirety on SACD hybrid disc. Born in Australia to Singaporean and Malaysian parents, Paul Wei is a London-based pianist who is also a practicing lawyer at a major London law firm. He is ranked as one of the top lawyers in The Legal 500. He began playing the piano at the age of 4, and at the age of 12, he performed his debut concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, attracting attention as a child prodigy. He later studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York under Nina Svetlanova, but he decided to become not only a pianist but also a lawyer, and studied law at the prestigious Oxford University Law School in London, where he has built his career to date. The BIS label fell in love with Wei's talent and made the recording possible.The first piece, Alkan's "12 Exercises in Minor, Op.39" (BIS SA 2465), was a stunning display of virtuosity. The performance was not only technical, but also full of emotion, captivating the audience. In the highly anticipated second release, the Swiss pianist and composer Sigismond Thalberg (1812-1871), who was active in the Romantic era, recorded a piano work. Thalberg was a gem of a pianist, a master of the piano alongside Liszt and Chopin. He was also a gifted composer, and left not only piano works but also operas, vocal pieces, and chamber music throughout his life. The "Song Techniques Applied to the Piano, Op.70" recorded here is a unique collection of 26 solo piano works in four volumes, each with piano arrangements based on operatic arias by Mozart, Bellini, Weber, Rossini, and others. The virtuoso Wei's work on this collection, which has rarely been recorded in its entirety, allows the listener to hear a performance that shines through. King International
