Description:

A fascinating compilation of Japanese Lovers Rock songs mainly from the Showa era that were fused with reggae and arrived in Japan via the UK! Reggae music, which was beginning to reach the ears of the Japanese public little by little at the time, was fused with songs and city pop, and arrived at its pop characteristics through a completely different route than the Lovers' Rock that was happening in the UK at the same time. The Japanese producers and artists included here were more influenced by the sound of British new wave pop via The Police and UB40 than by the direct influence of politically charged reggae from Jamaica, and they were more like Marley singing "punky reggae party" than the "socially rejected" as he sang in "Punky Reggae Party". It was not music for the "social rejects" as Marley sang in "Punky Reggae Party," but music that existed deep within the album as a type of commercial entertainment music released into the rapidly growing pre-bubble economy of Japan. Two songs from Miki Hirayama's 1982 album "Onigashima," produced by Haruo Chikada, were performed by Racial Fever, a band that Chikada described as "a terrific mix of Earth Wind & Fire, Weather Report, and the Police. The romantic Japanese Lovers' "Moonlight Beach," which begins with the sound of waves, is followed by "Microwave Range," a hard-edged reggae tune that borrows the bass line from Bob Marley's "Natural Mystic. In addition, Tadashi Kosaka's "Music," already influenced by Jimmy Cliff and recorded in Hawaii in 1976, was produced in 1981 by Masanori Sasaji of Malaia, who was strongly influenced by Compass Studio, and sung by 18-year-old Malin, who had just arrived in Japan from the Philippines. Included is a reggae cover of Roberta Flack's "Hittin' Me Were It Hearts. Izumi "Mimi" Kobayashi, known for her national hit "Lamb's Love Song," the theme song from Urusei Yatsura, and who has been living in the UK since 1984, recorded "Lazy Love" in 1981 while making an album in LA. and offered her to record the song. She sang to the musicians, who could not read music, in the studio before recording the song. Also included are Miharu Koshi's "Coffee Break," a fusion of city pop and new wave reggae; Junko Yagami's conscious reggae lament about apartheid, "Johannasberg;" and the beautiful orchestral arrangement by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto of Lily, 1976's "Tenki ni Narena Areat. Featuring 4 pages of liner notes with photos from the era and both Japanese and English, plus newly written artwork by Noncheleee, a popular Fukuoka-based illustrator reminiscent of Wilfred Limonious, this is available only as an analog LP and album download (no distribution). No distribution). Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985" is part of Time Capsule's "Nippon Series," a series that showcases various scenes from Japan's past. Stay tuned for more to come.
