In the history of the guitar, it is said that Levay was a composer and focused on chamber music. He is said to have been "delighted to discover that the combination of oboe or clarinet and guitar sounded far more attractive than the combination with piano." He composed more than 600 guitar pieces, many of them chamber pieces. Levay's fascination with the viola led him to complete this collection of works, which is important because of its rarity in the Viennese viola repertoire of the 20th century.
