Founded in 1934 by the wealthy John Christie, the festival is organized by the Christie family, with the chairmanship passing from John to his son George and then to his grandson Gus.\nThe inaugural performance was Mozart’s *The Marriage of Figaro*, conducted by Fritz Busch. Although the program has since centered primarily on Mozart’s operas, as shown in this footage, operas by Handel, Janáček, and others have also become an important part of the repertoire. Although the United Kingdom lagged somewhat behind other parts of Europe in terms of opera production, this festival brought together the finest singers and conductors of the time, eventually establishing itself as a “hub of opera” in the UK, on par with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This video features spectacular scenes from 12 works in the repertoire, showcasing singers such as Anne-Sophie von Otter, Daniel de Nies, and John Mark Ainsley, as well as conductors including William Christie and Mark Elder.
