Strauss, Richard (1864-1949)
Description:
In 1919, Richard Strauss was appointed general director of the Vienna State Opera. He began composing new ballet music for the Redoutensaal in the newly renovated Hofburg Imperial Palace. What he eventually completed was the eight-piece "Dance Suite," based on the keyboard works of the French Baroque composer François Couperin. The work was presented at the Carnival in February 1923, where Strauss's extravagant orchestration captivated a large audience. In 1941, Strauss composed a new divertimento for the "Verklungene Feste" at the Bavarian Opera, which was adapted from the Butoh Suite. Strauss wrote many more works. Strauss wrote many more works after that, but these works, which did not use the twelve-tone or atonal techniques of the 20th century, were considered "behind the times," and even today, they are not fairly regarded as having received the recognition they deserve. In this album, we can enjoy his rare ballet music written after "The Knight of Roses" under the excellent direction of Quasi-Merkle, and explore Strauss's insatiable spirit of exploration.
