Widor, Charles-Marie (1844-1937)
Description:
This is the second in a series of performances of French composer Charles-Marie Vidor's "Organ Symphony" by the virtuoso Wolfgang Lüpzum. Although many organists believe that Vidor's works can only be performed perfectly on the instruments made by the "master organist" Cavaillé-Coll, Vidor's favorite instrument for many years, Vidor himself was a virtuoso organist and played the symphonies in various churches he visited on tour, Vidor himself is documented to have played various organs in the churches he visited during his tours. In this series, Lüpzum uses a Skinner organ to explore new possibilities in tone and sound. The second collection includes Organ Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4. No. 3 opens with a prelude written in a Baroque style reminiscent of Bach, and its technical final movement is a highlight. No. 4, with its gorgeous Toccata at the beginning, is an improvisatory, progressive work with ingenious details throughout. The fourth movement of No. 2, "Scherzo," added as a bonus track, was later replaced by "Salve Regina. It is a bright work with a lively expression that is now often performed alone. Naxos Japan
