Description:

Matthew Gee plays trombone in the critically acclaimed brass ensemble Septura, which will visit Japan in 2019. He has been principal trombonist of the Royal Philharmonic since 2010 and is a sought-after soloist as well as mentor to younger musicians at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In this album, he plays Schubert's famous song cycle "Winterreise". The trombone is an instrument that can create a wide variety of tones by using various techniques such as portamento and vibrato, and the challenge of playing this song is no mean feat. However, in order to perform German lieder, which cannot use words, and which "places particular importance on lyrics," it was necessary to first get rid of the concept of lyrics. Gee succeeded in freeing himself from the spell of the text by replacing the titles of all the pieces with English once and for all. A new "Winter Journey" by trombone without words was born. Sometimes tenderly, sometimes fiercely, the piece earnestly conveys the feelings of a young man overcome by despair. Naxos Japan
