Description:

At a young age, he achieved success on the Viennese musical stage, but defected to the United States. Korngold broke new ground by bringing the compositional techniques he had cultivated in Vienna to Hollywood film music and adapting his favorite works to his own violin concertos, but the basis of his spirit was pure music. The chamber works on this disc do not have the splendor of symphonic music, but they reveal his unadorned side in their concise, condensed sound. Korngold's own arrangement for violin and piano of the "Four Pieces" is well known, but in 2012 an autograph manuscript of the string quartet version was discovered. However, for some reason, only the "Garden Scene (Interlude)" was not arranged. Therefore, this album introduces four pieces with Tom Poster's new arrangement, which was recorded for the first time in the world. The Piano Quintet was composed the following year. The String Quartet from 1933 is a work that strongly expresses Korngold's love for Vienna.The rousing opening melody and the waltz in the last movement are reminiscences of good times. The Eusebius Quartet performing the piece is an ensemble formed in 2016. The name is taken from the fictional character "Eusebius" created by Schumann. Naxos Japan
