Two 15th century masses that have long been known to scholars of Renaissance polyphony but have never seen the light of day due to the difficulty of revising scores and, above all, the fact that the composers cannot be identified at all, The Cut Circle, an up-and-coming group that is gaining recognition for its remarkable activities in the world of ancient music singing, has released these two long-awaited CDs. Both masses were written in beautiful handwriting, but there were some obvious errors that did not make sense when read as they were, and after careful examination, they were revised to be playable. The result was a surprisingly ambitious work that shows the best of compositional technique in every detail of the intertwining voices, tempo, rhythm, and development of the piece. Moreover, each work has many difficult passages that require a great deal of skill to sing (in the Missa gross senen, the singer must sing for an astonishingly long time without pausing for breath), suggesting that the composer had in mind a singer of considerable skill, whoever he might be.Depending on future research, it may turn out to be a work by a surprisingly great composer, or it may become a topic of conversation that an as yet unknown genius was hidden in the time of Dufay and Ockeghem! In any case, this is a landmark recording that should not be missed by those who are interested in Renaissance polyphony. The four singers, including Sonia Dutoit Tengblad, who is also active as a soloist, bring out the best of the work's beauty with an exquisite sense of harmony. Naxos Japan
