Description:

The "Tartini of the Bass" is a unique and rich disc for this anniversary year! Mario Brunello, one of the leading cellists of modern Italy, has recently been experimenting with a unique small cello based on Amati's model. It is still fresh in our memories that he recorded a very successful collection of Bach's unaccompanied violin works on this instrument, which has the same tuning as the violin and produces a bass tone in a different octave (domestic version NYCX-10100/imported version A469). This time, he releases an album with the same instrument, this time facing important composers from his home country Italy. This is a remarkable project, and the selection of music is very particular. Tartini was born in 1692, a little later than Bach, and this year (2020) marks the 250th anniversary of his death. Most of Tartini's works are for violin, which he himself boasted of his outstanding performance ability, but there are a few works written for bass strings, which have been loved by the cello masters. In this disc, however, Brunello also performs the works for violin on the small four-string cello mentioned above, referring to the latest musicological findings. The program also includes a recently discovered work for gamba, which is part of the same collection as Telemann's unaccompanied gamba works, as well as an ensemble concerto arrangement by a student. The concerto is performed by the Italian period instrument ensemble, who also gave a masterful performance on the double concerto album by Brunello and Carmignola (NYCX-10133/A472). Naxos Japan
