Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

Johann Sebastian Bach's unfinished magnum opus, "The Technique of Fugue," is a four-voice fugue on three themes, the "Fourteenth Contrapunctus," known for its abrupt break at measure 239, which was once said to be due to Bach's failing health. However, recent research has cast doubt on this theory. Attempts to complete the unfinished fugue have been made for some time, and the Salzburg Chamber Soloists, led by Schluen, made an interesting attempt by performing the original unfinished fugue as well as the completed version by three composers, Hermann Pirny, Francis Tovey, and Kalevi-Aho. This is an interesting attempt to unravel the history of polyphony from the Baroque period to the present day. The various fugues played by the string ensemble have the flavor of a solemn religious piece. The "Fugue in the name of BACH" by Schumann and Schilling is inserted between the pieces and serves as a nice interlude. Naxos Japan
