A collection of works by Polish-German composer Philip Scharwenka, a well-known pianist and composer. His brother Franz Kusavá, three years younger than him, was also an outstanding musician. Philip studied music with his brother at the New Music Academy in Berlin, and in 1874 he presented his own overture and symphony at a concert, which was at the forefront of German composers at the time. His works were soon forgotten. Recently, however, his works have begun to be reappraised and performed more and more often. In this album, Portuguese pianist Luis Pipa performs piano pieces from his middle period, all of which are reminiscent of Schumann and Brahms. Some of them have an introspective atmosphere reminiscent of Schumann and Brahms, while others come closer to the Impressionist sound, with sudden insertions of modulations and unique harmonic progressions, making them very appealing.
