Description:

The fifth collection in Eric Le Sage's Brahms chamber music series includes the Viola Sonata and "Two Songs" in which the viola also plays an active role. Brahms, who had taken a break from composing in his later years, was inspired to write again when he met Richard Muehlfeldt, the famous clarinetist, and his series of clarinet works are all masterpieces. Among them, Brahms' last sonata, the "Two Clarinet Sonatas" of 1894, was arranged for viola by Brahms himself, and both the clarinet and viola versions of the sonatas are now well-loved by both clarinetists and viola players. The two songs were written in 1863-64 (No. 2, "Sacred Lullaby") and 1884 (No. 1, "Secret Longing"). The compositions are austere and beautiful works with alto and viola designated as the orchestration, which is very much to Brahms's liking. The young virtuoso Lise Berteau plays the viola in this piece, and she plays the melody with a deep and tasteful tone. Sarah Laurent, who has released an album on the Fuga Libera label, joins the group for the songs, and we hope you will enjoy the moment when the three of them meld together. Naxos Japan
