Description:
Giovanni Paolo Colonna spent most of his career as choir director of the church of San Petronio in Bologna (the last years of his life coincide with those of Corelli, born in 1653, who was active in this ancient city before leaving for Rome). Since taking charge of this imposing church with two organs and a wonderful sound, Colonna wrote many magnificent vocal and instrumental works, but also published two collections of small motets, one of which is recorded here. This recording is from the collection of motets that appeared in 1681. These motets are written in a wide range of forms, combining traditional techniques with innovative aspects that would influence future generations, and although they are small motets, they are the forerunners of later music in the concertante form. Each piece is given its own character through a variety of techniques, from solo recitative to combinations of mixed voice doubles and trios, and is structured in a way that follows the text naturally. The elite Belgian group Scelzi Musicali, led by Nicolas Akten, is a bass player who plays theorbo, baroque harp, harpsichord, and organ, and also sings and accompanies himself as a baritone singer. The group will convey the charm of works from 17th-century Bologna while making full use of each member's skills and unique talents. Naxos Japan
