Description:
Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in D minor, composed in 1822, and Schneider's Symphony No. 17, composed two years later. Both works are rarely performed today, but it would be truly difficult to hear the difference between the forgotten Schneider and Mendelssohn, who is still celebrated as a "genius," in these two works. Their talents are so closely matched that it is difficult to tell the difference between them. Mendelssohn, however, has grown remarkably in two years, and the fuller style of his First Symphony completely surpasses Schneider's. The Capella Coloniensis conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken and violinist Hiro Kurosaki recreate the sound of the period. This is a revival of a classic recording that had long been out of print.
