Nuebrugge takes on Stockhausen's problematic work. Convincing awesomeness! Jean-Frédéric Nuebrugge's new album, "Mantra," a major work by Stockhausen, is performed by the duo with veteran Jean-François Esser. It will be interesting to see how Nuebrugge and Esser tackle this difficult piece. The "Mantra" is said to have been inspired by Stockhausen's visit to Japan in 1970 for the Osaka World's Fair, when he strolled and meditated at Buddhist temples in Kyoto and Nara. The pianist also plays percussion, and the modulated sounds are reminiscent of wooden fish and orin, evoking an oriental spirituality. It is a very difficult piece, but Neubourget's brilliant performance offers more fresh discoveries than any other recording, and the effects of the electronics shine ever more brightly.
