Hyperion releases Francisco Garo's album 'Missae'. The term \"buried\" is literal, as the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed most of this music. According to the 1649 catalog of the music library of King João IV of Portugal, only a small fraction of this lost heritage survives for us today. Francisco Garo was a composer who oversaw the renowned Royal Chapel in Lisbon for thirty years and published important choral works. The Masses and motets on this album are newly reconstructed from those scores. Cuperto won the 2019 Gramophone Award for his recording of Manuel Cardoso's Requiem, a work by the renowned Portuguese composer and organist.Subsequent albums featuring Portuguese Renaissance composers Duarte Lobô and Magalhães have also been released, but this latest work is arguably the most astonishing discovery. Most of the pieces are being commercially recorded for the very first time.
