Jerusalem SQ takes on the challenge of cabaret songs that flourished in pre-war Germany and Poland! The Jerusalem Quartet, highly acclaimed for its standard string quartet repertoire, was encouraged by Harmonia Mundi to "try something a little different, but still interesting to listen to. This is a collection of music in search of roots. Poland had the largest Jewish population in the world before World War II, and was not only at the forefront in the fields of academics and arts, but also led the German Weimar culture that flourished from around 1918 to 1933, and the kabaret (cabaret) songs that took the world by storm were examples of Jewish cultural maturity. Although it disappeared during the Holocaust of World War II, it was an element in the development of vaudeville and musicals, which moved to Hollywood and Broadway. In order to see the Polish-Jewish street music of the time from a current perspective, the contemporary Russian composer Leonid Deshatnikov was commissioned to re-create popular songs for soprano and string quartet, and "Yiddish" was born. The innovative writing style for strings breathes modern life into Jewish songs.To clarify the fringes, the album includes works by Korngold and Schulhoff, two Jewish composers active at the time. The rise of the Nazis brought the former to the United States to pursue a successful career in film music, while the latter was sent to a concentration camp where he perished at the age of 48. The two pieces included here are classical adaptations of Weimar kabaret songs in their own way, and the unique atmosphere is intoxicating.
