Harding's New Album is a Head-to-Head Tackling the Works of Rameau and Berlioz! Daniel Harding, born in 1975, has been Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris since the 2016-17 season. He has been music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for almost 10 years since 2007, and the two orchestras are well-known for their affinity for each other, as evidenced by the Bartók Violin Concerto (HMC 902146/ KKC 5384) with Isabelle Faust. Here, Harding has chosen Rameau, the great Baroque composer, and Berlioz, the ultimate Romantic. Although they may seem distant from each other, they are less than 100 years apart in terms of the premieres of their major works: the first performance of "Ippolito and Aricie" in 1733, and the first performance of "Symphonie fantastique" in 1830. Ippolito et Aricie was premiered in October 1733 as Rameau's first tragedy lyric, and in this work, Rameau rethought the role of arias and chorus, and revolutionized instrumental music with dances and descriptive orchestral pieces.The Symphonie fantastique, on the other hand, is a precursor to the titular music with a concrete object of expression, and uses innovative techniques such as fixed ideas. Harding accentuates the drama of each work while skillfully guiding the orchestra through stimulating harmonies and rhythms that resonate effectively.
