The twelfth recording in the series features Brahms' Symphony No. 4, coupled with MacMillan's Larghetto for Orchestra. Manfred Honeck has extended his contract with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he has served as principal conductor since 2008, through the 2027/2028 season. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been led by many world-class conductors, including Fritz Reiner, André Previn, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons. The orchestra has also always been committed to new works, including commissions from contemporary composers such as Mason Bates, Jonathan Leshnoff, James MacMillan, and Julia Wolff. This is the 13th season with Manfred Honeck, and with an orchestra that boasts 125 years of history, there is much to look forward to in the future for further activities. Brahms' last symphony, the 4th. It is the culmination of Brahms' symphonic works and was premiered in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, under Brahms' own baton. It is a work full of solitary charm, full of the melancholy and beauty characteristic of Brahms' later years, while at the same time being absolute music like a splendid piece of architecture. Honeck discusses its musical structure and unique interpretation in the liner notes. James MacMillan is a contemporary composer from Scotland. The Larghetto for Orchestra, included here, was commissioned by the orchestra to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Horneck's appointment as music director; it had its world premiere in October 2017, and this album includes a performance of it.
