The Patrum Institute Choir's second Russian chant in English composed by an American in the 21st century is in mixed voices and takes on a new work by contemporary American composer Kurt Sander, "The Liturgy of St. Johannes Chrysostomos". This unique work is an American work but traditional Russian Orthodox liturgical music. It was commissioned by the Patriarchate of Tikhon's Russian-American Music Institute and composed in 2016-17 with the Patrum Academy Choir in mind. Kurt Sander was born in 1969. He studied with Bain Murray and others at Northwestern University and developed an avant-garde style, but in 1992, a Russian woman he met invited him to sing in an Orthodox choir, which opened his eyes to the acoustic world of Russian chant, and he converted the following year. He is now one of the leading authorities on Russian chant in the United States. Since the Russian Orthodox Church forbids the playing of musical instruments in church, this work consists of 90 minutes of a cappella chorus only, and it is also surprising that the liturgy, which is commonly sung in Slavonic, is in English. The work is also surprising in that the liturgy, which is usually performed in church Slavonic, is in English. From the contemplative world reminiscent of Pärt to the thick harmonies, the voices alone will move you to the fullest extent.
