Karel Staerts studied with Carlo Schmitz at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and later with Maria Kriegel at the Cologne University of Music. In 1990, he won the first prize at the Tenuto Competition (Belgium). For many years he has been principal cellist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the Beethoven Academy, and since 2008 principal cellist of the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. 2006 he founded the Trio Phoenix, which participates in national and international festivals. With his extensive experience in orchestral and chamber music, he will take on the challenge of performing J.S.
