As you can hear in the live recording of Symphonies No. 7 and No. 5 (SDG 717) at Carnegie Hall in 2011, the orchestra has continued to carefully refine its high level of perfection and meticulously constructed style. The orchestra members describe rehearsals as being like a laboratory. Many ideas are placed on a microscope table and experimented with one after another. You can feel Gardiner's uncompromising approach to music making. The Symphonies Nos. 2 and 8 are among Beethoven's symphonies that Gardiner particularly likes.Symphony No. 2 has a lightness that is not the heavy gloom often found in Beethoven's symphonies, but rather a positive outlook on life and a lightness that is Mozart-like.
