This is a collection of madrigals by Johann Grabbe (1585-1655), a German composer of the same generation as Schütz, who became a member of the Bückeburg court choir at the age of 11, studied organ with Cornelius Conradus, and after a successful career as an organist went to Venice to study with Giovanni Gabrieli and studied with him, leaving behind works in the Italian style of madrigals. However, none of his madrigals are extant except for the first collection.The quintessence of his originality and compositional technique, Antony Lurie considers this madrigale to be a masterpiece on par with Monteverdi.
