Gary Carpenter’s work draws inspiration from the painter Piet Mondrian (as referenced in the album title and cover design) and looks back to early 20th-century orchestrations (such as Falla’s concerto).\nGavin Bryars’ work takes the form of a Baroque concerto, but they pay homage to the little-known fact that “Ferruccio Busoni actually played the harpsichord and personally owned an instrument from the American company ‘Chickering’”; the unique scale structures and musical theories advocated by Busoni are subtly incorporated into the pieces as a hidden element.\nThe works by Carpenter and Bryars were commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, and all three were premiered by Esfahani.
