Description:

The following six points can be pointed out as the main points of this performance and recording: (1) The performance as a whole was free of glaring errors, and it was full to the end. (2) There are no particular malfunctions in the tapes or ageing of the recordings that would reduce the overall impression of the performance, and there is no lack of volume or deterioration of sound quality in the final movement. (3)The first movement's development fugue section is fuller and more powerful due to the magnificent expression at the beginning of the recapitulation section, and there is an ideal balance in the expression of each movement. (4) The third movement is deeply expressive and refreshing, and its natural flow is superb. (5) The music was enthusiastic from the beginning, and the conductor, orchestra, soloists, chorus, and audience all seemed to be united in their commitment to the music and the performance. (6) Furtwängler's individuality was maximally demonstrated throughout the entire performance, but beyond that, the content of Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony" was directly conveyed to the audience, which is the highest praise.(Haruyoshi Hirata, Furtwängler Society of Japan) [From the liner notes added in February 2019] "A live performance of the 31st has already been released on the Gramophone label, with a mature interpretation of the Bayreuth recording, which is quite wonderful, and the recording is even better than the Bayreuth recording, The recording is even better than the Bayreuth version, but this 30th disc is even better, both in performance and recording, and shows the ultimate "Ninth" that Furtwängler reached in his last years.
