Itou, a Japanese officer working as a spy, disguises himself as a Chinese servant and infiltrates the Russian military headquarters in Manchuria, where he is reunited with the widow Lydia, a socialite in St. Petersburg with whom he had once pledged his love. Through Lydia, Itou learns a secret military code word from Kacharov, a Russian military commander who has feelings for Itou, but the information is false. The operetta \"Spring Storm\" by Czech-born Jaromir Weinberger, who was active in Germany and the U.S., was premiered in Berlin in 1933, the year Hitler came to power, but the Nazis banned its continued performance and the score was almost lost. For the Berlin Komische Oper, Norbert Biermann has reconstructed and arranged the work from the piano score and surviving parts. The revival of this work after 87 years, directed by Barry Kosky, one of the most sought-after directors in the world today, who was invited by Katharina Wagner to direct \"Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg\" at the 2017 Bayreuth Festival, was a big hit on stage. The cast includes Tanzel Akzeybek, who has a youthful voice as the Japanese officer Ito; Vera-Lotte Becker, who sings and plays the heroine, the beautiful Lydia, with a bewitching voice; and the famous actor Stefan Kurt, who plays the Russian general, Kacharov. Weinberger's Jazz Operetta, which combines the tradition of Central European comic opera as represented by J. Strauss and Lehar with the American dance music of the early 20th century, is beautifully revived by the clear and emotional direction of Jordan de Souza.
