This bargain-priced box set features the outstanding works of choreographer Frederick Ashton from the pioneering days of the Royal Ballet, released in 2013 (DISC 3), 2016 (DISC 1), and 2017 (DISC 2), respectively, and were a huge hit. Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody (on a Theme by Paganini) is a superb masterpiece with no plot, starring Baryshnikov and premiered at a concert celebrating Empress Elizabeth's 80th birthday in August 1980. The popular duo of Osipova and McCray perform a superb dance. On the other hand, Andre Messager's "Two Pigeons" premiered at the Paris Opera in the late 19th century, and since Ashton's new choreography in 1961, this popular work has become a staple of the Royal Ballet. In addition to Cuthbertson, Muntagirov, and Morella, Ryoichi Hirano, who was promoted to Principal of the Ballet this year (2016), will perform a love romance with a light touch. A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a magical world full of charm, newly choreographed by Ashton to music by Mendelssohn based on Shakespeare's play.Akane Takada, who joined the Royal Ballet as a trainee in 2008 after winning the Prix de Lausanne, and was promoted to principal in 2016, plays Titania in this topical performance. Symphonic Variations is a fine piece with impressive choreography filled with the abstract, pure beauty of Ashton's early years. The duo of Nunez and Muntagirov will perform a fantastic dance. Marguerite et Armand" was choreographed by Ashton for Nureyev and Fontaine. This video is from the retirement performance of former Royal Ballet principal dancer Zenaida Janowski. Her intimate pas de deux with guest Roberto Bolle is a thing of beauty. DISC 3, which features a succession of five works ranging from abstract to tragic love, was produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ashton's death.
