French conductor Louis Fremaux (August 13, 1921-) was commissioned by King Rainier III to serve as chief conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo from 1956 to 1965, and from 1969 to 1971 as the first music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhône-Alpes (now the Orchestre National de Lyon). From 1969 to 1971, he was the first music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhône-Alpes (now Orchestre National de Lyon). At the same time, he became the Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1969 to 1978. After witnessing the orchestra's rise to prominence, he turned the role over to Simon Rattle. He then served as Principal Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra until 1982.
