What a colorful sound. The Goltberg Variations by a woodwind quartet! A masterful performance by the virtuoso Arndt Quartet! Bach's famous Goltberg Variations are well known. Various arrangements have been released, but this recording is performed by the Arndt Quartet (oboe, clarinet, basset horn, and bassoon), a group of virtuoso musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic and Czech Philharmonic. The quartet's colorful sound is as if it were a combination of the various stops of the organ. Also of note is Suite No. 1! The lively tempo and performance bring out new charms of this piece. Bassoonist Václav Vonášek is one of the most talented players in the orchestra, having won the Melbourne International Double Reed Society Competition in 2004 and the International Competition in Lodz in 2005.
