This is especially true of his Mozart performances, including this 1958 Mercury recording with the London Symphony Orchestra. Schmidt-Isserstedt conducts Mozart with such a deep scholarly understanding of his music that he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the influence of Italy on Mozart, but this does not interfere with the vitality of the music, as this recording of the Jupiter Symphony clearly demonstrates. Schmidt-Isserstedt toured the UK frequently and successfully with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he founded after the war, and developed a good relationship with the orchestra in London, where he had guest conductors until his death in 1973 and was inspired by them. As on the first release, Schubert's Symphony No. 6 is coupled with the Symphony No. 4 conducted by Walter Juskind, a Czech-born exile in England.
